Mount Abu India Travel Guide

Located on the southern foot hill of the Aravali Range, Mount Abu is the lone hill station in the state of Rajasthan. Mount Abu is located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, and so has a very different flora and climate than the other cities in the state. Mount Abu is famous for its exquisite beauty, and for being the only hill station in the state of Rajasthan. The city is well known for its sheer size, as it’s the second largest city in the state. It also is a place of virtue and worship for the Hindu and Jain community. It is very famous for the summer festivals that are held every June.

Mount Abu History

The hill city of Mount Abu is more associated to legend than to history. The myth goes that the city was visited by more than three-hundred-and-thirty-million Hindu Gods in ancient times. Another myth is that the city was created by a magical snake called Arbud, the area therefore coming to be known as Mount Arbud, later changing to Mount Abu.

The history is not as fascinating as the myth, but it still has some color. The city, along with state, was under the rule of the Rajputs after the fall of the Gupta Dynasty. It was the Rajputs that brought stability to the state. Though the state was later captured by the Delhi Sultanate, the Rajputs fought and won back their territories. Like the rest of India, though, Mount Abu fell to the British over the East India Company started taking over.

Mount Abu Things To Do and Attractions

The city is flooded with tourist places.

One of the famous Mount Abu things to do is to visit the Dilwara Temple. It is a sacred place for the Jain community. It is a collection of five temples made of marble, with extremely intricate carvings all over.

Mount Abu is a popular place for honeymooners, with spots like the sunset and honey moon point which offer spectacular views of the valley.

The Nakki Lake is good picnic spot and offers lots of activities like boating and rock climbing.

Mount Abu Excursions

Eight kilometers from the city is Achalgarh, a place holding high value for the Jain community. It has numerous temples, some with gold images.

Another place of scenic beauty is Guru Shikar, which is fifteen kilometers from the city. It is the highest peak point of the city, with a beautiful temple atop.

Eleven kilometers from the city is the Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple. The temple is very important because of the Shiva Baan, and the natural cavity it has, whose depth has not been measured till date.

Mount Abu Shopping

Mount Abu is not a metropolitan city, but a peaceful town with bazaars. You can get your souvenirs of the city from the shops around the Nakki Lake. Sandalwood, marble, and sandstone items are plentiful, all at reasonable prices.

If you have interests in handicrafts, you can head straight for the Rajasthan Government Handicrafts Center. You can also get cheap Khadi attires in the Khadi bazaar.

Mount Abu Restaurants

Mount Abu, being a major tourist destination, has lots of restaurants serving national and international cuisines. The city doesn’t have a specialty of its own, but the different items of the state are very popular here. You can get all specialties of Rajasthan food in the city. Do not for get to try the combination of dal, bati and churma.

Mount Abu Nightlife

The city doesn’t have pubs or discos, but it has a very limited number of lounge bars, and some restaurant bars. Alcoholic beverages is served at nominal rates here.

Mount Abu Getting There and Around

The city doesn’t have a airport, and the nearest airport is too-hundred kilometers from the city in Udaipur. The city however is highly by railways and roadways.

I'm being critical of the hotel mainly because I was traveling by myself when I stayed at this hotel. There was nothing going on at the hotel, and it's a good walk to the main town. Besides, there's not much going on in town anyway. The hotel itself is good. Nice, but small grounds surrounded by jungle. The landcape is very beatiful.
