The Prince of Wales Museum, recently renamed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya, is located on the famous 'Crescent Site' next to the Gateway of India. This Mumbai thing to do is an excellent showcase for the breadth and depth of the civilizations that populated the Indian subcontinent, and is a popular draw for Mumbai tourism. Like a lot of buildings built during the British days, the Prince of Wales Museum, which opened to the public in 1922, is a mix of architectural styles. Designed by George Wittet, it combines Gothic and Moorish styles, the latter of which is evident in the grand white dome topping the yellow and blue façade. Wittet also designed some of the other famous landmarks around Mumbai including the Institute of Science building, The Gateway of India, the Wadia Maternity Hospital, and the King Edwards Hospital. The Prince of Wales Museum contains artifacts like fishing hooks, arms, weights and measures dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished around 2,500 B.C. Other exhibits include sculptures, Indian miniature paintings, natural history displays, far eastern art, arms & armor, bronzes and textiles.
