A visit to Mysore city during the ten-day Dasara celebrations is a must.Perhaps nowhere else in India is the festival Dasara celebrated on such a grand scale as in Mysore, Karnataka State. The 10-day-long festival, celebrates Goddess Chamundeshwari's vicotory over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishashura, culminating in Vijaya Dashami on the 10th day. With the abolition of Princely States, the royal pomp and splendor have faded a mite, but the celebrations continue to be enormously popular, attracting tourists from India and abroad to witness the pomp and pageantry. The richly illuminated palace of the maharaja hosts music festivals by renowned artists and is open to the public. folk dance shows, processions and sports events also mark the occasion. Several temples in the city also conduct religious ceremonies, notably the spectacular Chamundeshwari Temple atop the Chamundi Hills.
