Ranchi is located at an altitude of more than two-thousand feet in the center of the Chota Nagpur plateau. The province was always heavily infested with tribals from the surrounding states in the old days. It was only after the conquest of the Magadha Empire, that most of the tribes were made extinct or fled. After gruesome wars, the region was then conquered by the Mughals and then by the British Empire. The city was a prime part of Bihar after Indian independence, but after the formation of the new state Jharkhand, Ranchi was made its capital.

Ranchi is eminent as the city of waterfalls. It is also famous as a highly industrialized zone along with lush green hills side by side. Thirty-five kilometers from Ranchi are the Sita and Dassam Falls, which is a wonderful picnic spot with a gorgeous view of the waterfalls. It is also a very popular spot for trekking. Flanking the Sita falls is another beautiful waterfall known as the Johna Falls. Two other waterfalls worth mentioning are the Hundru Falls and Hirni Falls.The city is filled with scenic beauties and hills. The magnificent Tagore hill, which is named after the Nobel Prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore, is a popular attraction in Ranchi. Another thing to do worth mentioning is the Ranchi Hill, which has temple dedicated to Lord Shiva alongside a beautiful lake. Those interested in anthropology can also visit the Bihar Tribal Research Institute and Museum, which is one of the Ranchi points of interest. About twenty kilometers from the city is a popular breeding centre – a perfect site for reptile lovers. Ninety kilometers from the city is the Betla National park, home to some of the most endangered species in the world. Do try and get in some shopping when in Ranchi. It is a good place for handicrafts and paintings, as they are one of a kind and are available at cheap prices.
