There are many Sun Temples all over India. Modhera Sun Temple is one of the finest and another one is Konarak Sun Temple. Modhera sun temple is divided into three main sections. 1 - Suryakund, a huge 176 ft. X 120 ft. step-well nearly four stories deep and steps on all the four sides. On the steps there are 108 miniature shrines and 4 large shrines.2 - Sabha Mandap (Assembly Hall) - A huge and very intricately carved structure open on all the sides with four doorways on each side. There are 52 wonderfully carved pillars inside and the outer walls are also beautifully carved.3 - Guda Mandap - This is where the main idol of the Sun God was resting in old times. Now the idol is not there. All the three structures of Modhera Sun Temple are so designed that on every Solar Equinoxes i.e. 21st March & 23rd Sept., the first rays of the rising sun penetrates through the door openings and after passing through the Sabha Mandap, the rays enter the Guda Mandap and fall directly on the idol of the Sun God in the inner most Chamber. Guda Mandap is also profusly carved.It is a must for tourists coming to Gujarat.
