Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi India Rashtrapati Bhavan is the residence of the President of India, and is situated on Raisina hill. It was initially built by the British as the residence of the Viceroy, and has a total of 340 rooms. The first occupant of this building, which was designed by Lutyens, was Lord Irwin.

It has a large court and a garden which is open to public view, albeit for a short while in February when the flowers are in full bloom.

The garden has a terraced landscape and resembles the Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, Kashmir.

The building has a large main dome under which is the main hall where the President hosts official functions. The columns at the front entrance have bells carved into them, designed with the idea that since these stone carved bells could not ring, the British rule would never come to an end. The thought hails from the superstition that the ringing of the bell would bring an end to the empire.

The Durbar hall initially served as a museum for several years until the building which now houses the National Museum was constructed. Every Saturday between 10.35 a.m. to 11.10 a.m. in winter and 8.30 a.m. to 9.15 a.m. in summer the President’s Bodyguard changes guard and this can be seen from outside the gate.

To visit the building one must contact the deputy Military Secretary to The President. Only the Durbar Hall, Ashok Hall, the Dining Room and the Mughal Gardens are accessible to the president.
