The Laxmi Narayan temple, more popularly known as the Birla Mandir, is one of the most popular temples in
Delhi. The temple is a major Delhi thing to do and attraction. It enshrines almost all the deities in the Hindu religion. Situated in the heart of the city, this is one of the major tourist and pilgrim destinations of Delhi. This temple was inaugurated by none other than the
father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi in 1938. The Mahatma had one condition that people of all strata of society be allowed to offer prayers there on account of the major prevalence of untouchability at that time.The temple is built in the
Nagara style of architecture interspersed with modern influences. The entire temple is decorated with carvings depicting various scenes from Indian mythology. The temples premise is dotted with miniature rock temples, which are proving to be very popular among the children. Goddess of wealth Laxmi, and
Narayana, the Protector. All Hindu festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm, but the celebrations of
Janmashtami the birth of Lord Krishna, and
Deepawali (or Diwali) the celebration of the victory of righteousness, attract a huge crowd to the temple. One of the most important festivals of the Hindus Janamashtami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna is conducted with great fervor at the temple. Year in and year out the celebration attracts lakhs of devotees to the temple on that particular day. At the entrance is a plaque, which welcomes people of all faiths and religions to visit the temple.
