Akshardham Temple Delhi India

The Swaminarayan Akshardham Delhi complex is a Monument to World Peace, and is nicknamed “India’s Spiritual Theme Park”. The temple complex was opened to the public on Nov 6th, 2005, and is claimed as one of the greatest Indian monuments ever constructed. It is one of the newest things to do in Delhi.

The complex took about five years to complete, which is astonishing given its size and splendor… not to mention how long it usually takes to get things done in India.
The entire complex sprawls over hundred acres of land, and took over USD $40 million to complete, and consists of six main attractions: • The Monument: The Akshardham Temple’s main monument is constructed of pink stone and white marble. It boasts two-hundred-and-thirty carved pillars, nine ornate domes, a magnificent base of carved elephants, and twenty-thousand statues of India’s saddhus or saints.

Hall of Values: The Hall of Values aims to portray the essential basics of Eastern spiritual philosophy in the Akshardham Temple. Values of harmony, non-violence, prayers, are preached through modern mechanisms such as fiber optics, robotics, and sound and light effects.

Giant Film Screen: Another attraction in the Akshardham Temple complex is the eighty-five by eighty-five foot screen that is over six stories high. It shows a short film of the spiritually realized boy, Neelkanth Varni. The boy left his village in 1793, when he was eleven years old, in search of The Truth. He completed his quest seven years later. The film chronicles his journey. The boy later became famous as Lord Swaminarayan. • Boat Ride: The twelve minute boat ride takes you through ten-thousand years of Indian history.

Musical Fountains: The Yagnapurush Kund at the Akshardham Temple complex, as the fountain area is called, is a dedication to Vedic fire-sacrifice rituals, some of the most ancient rituals of the Hindu religion. It consists of two-thousand-and-eight-hundred steps and measures three-hundred feet by three-hundred feet. • Garden of India: The gardens, or Bharat Upvan, consist of lush lawns and manicured gardens, with sixty bronze statues of the different historical and mythological people.

The Akshardham Temple complex draws all sorts of crowds from those pursuing a spiritual path to the wide-eyed tourists. It is a must see if you’re anywhere near Delhi.
